Parenting is harder in the Digital Age

In the July 2020 Pew Research Center study, “Parenting Children in the Age of Screens,”1 the subtitle read:

“Two-thirds of parents in the U.S. say parenting is harder today than it was 20 years ago, with many citing technologies – like social media or smartphones – as a reason.”

Technology offers many conveniences and information. But it is also a source of stress for many parents.  Threats like cyberbullying, online enticement, and sextortion can occur on a screen right inside our homes.

Parents are rightfully worried about their children’s safety online. In a survey of 4-8 graders, 62% had visited an adult site and 40% connected with a stranger.2 In another Cyberbullying Research Center survey of 5539 teens, 12% said that they have sent sexually explicit images of themselves to another person.3 These dangerous online behaviors can lead to:

  • long-term emotional trauma

  • low view of self

  • negative impact on school performance

  • relational difficulties

  • physical health issues including insomnia, eating disorder, addiction

With the COVID-19 lockdowns, children’s exposure to the wild wild web exponentiated. More children are online at a younger age and for a much longer length of time. Schools were conducted virtually and socialization was done almost all virtually. As a result, the need for more education and better tools to safeguard children online has accelerated.
Parents shouldn’t have to close their eyes and cross their fingers when it comes to their child’s online safety. That’s an awful feeling of helplessness. Parents should be in control of their child’s safety online and offline…

We love kids.

FORTRESS

was birthed out of our love for kids. Our mission is to safely connect kids to the digital world.  We want to make parenting in the digital age easier and cultivate healthy online behaviors in children gradually.

We protect kids by giving parents, guardians and their villagers the knowledge and tools to do so. Knowledge: We provide step-by-step how to guides, tips and resources as well  as answer some tough questions that parents face in this digital age.

Tools: We are building the Fortress mobile app to protect kids online. It is a fully integrated mobile experience for kids. It’s not ready yet. But we can’t wait to share it with you! Through the Fortress mobile app (to be released in end of 2021), parents will have full supervision over their children’s devices and build a safe online community and experience for them. The collective effort will result in the most trusted community for young children in the digital age.

THE TEAM

Fortress lets parents create a safe “home” on their children’s devices. With Fortress, parents can rein in the wild wild web and create a device environment where they control the content and who has access to their kids. As a result, kids can feel safe and fortified when they are on the device.

Daphne founded California Against Slavery over a decade ago to combat human trafficking in the U.S. She was the co-proponent of Proposition 35 in 2012, a California ballot measure to provide more justice for human trafficking victims and survivors. It passed with 81.3% voter approval. It still holds the record as the most successful initiative in California history. After that, Daphne went on to be a foster mom and later worked on foster care reform. She did all these as her labor of love. Her career is in business intelligence and digital marketing analytics for mobile and software as a service (SaaS) businesses.

From her advocacy work in human trafficking, Daphne recognizes the possible dangers of children and adolescents on the internet. The typical victim of commercial sexual exploitation is first sold as a tween (9-12 years old). And the most common channel traffickers use to entice these tweens is the internet.

Through Daphne’s experience as a foster mom and guardian as well as an aunt, she feels the need for better tools to help safeguard kids online. She tested a number of different parental control apps and felt frustrated at how cumbersome and insufficient they could be. She’s seen firsthand the emotional and mental harm that children are exposed to when they aren’t guided and protected by parents and guardians. The healing process is both painful and long. Prevention is always the better, wiser, least time consuming route. Thus the vision for Fortress is formed.
